When to Book Your Wedding Photographer in Snohomish County

Quick Answer

If you are wondering when to book a wedding photographer, the answer is 6 to 12 months before the wedding, and the early end of that if you want a Saturday between June and the end of September. That is the window where Snohomish County dates disappear first. If your date is closer than that, ask anyway: Fridays, Sundays, weekdays and off-season Saturdays are often still open. Before you reach out, have a date (or two options), a venue or at least the town, and a rough idea of how many hours you want covered. Our wedding photography collections start at $2,500.

Every winter the inquiries we get start to sound the same: "We just got engaged, we're thinking August, are you free?" By the time those messages arrive, some of the August Saturdays are already spoken for. Knowing when to book a wedding photographer is mostly a matter of knowing how the calendar works in this part of Washington: a short dry season, a lot of couples who want the same few months of Saturdays, and photographers who can only be in one place on any given day. Here is the plain answer for Snohomish County, what to do if your date is closer than the ideal window, and a month-by-month outline if you are planning a 2027 wedding.

The Short Answer: Six to Twelve Months Before the Wedding

We recommend booking your photographer 6 to 12 months ahead of the wedding. The two ends of that range are not interchangeable. Twelve months is for a Saturday between June and the end of September at a popular venue, where the first couples to ask get the date. Six months is realistic for a spring or late-autumn Saturday, a Friday or Sunday in summer, or any weekday. If you are reading this in October 2026 with a summer 2027 date in mind, you are inside the window now, and the most popular July and August Saturdays are already starting to go.

The reason the window exists is simple. A venue can host a wedding every day of the week, and a florist or a caterer can serve several weddings on one Saturday. A photographer cannot. We are a husband-and-wife team, we photograph one wedding per date, and once a couple has signed for a Saturday it belongs to them. That is why national guides such as The Knot's vendor booking timeline put the photographer right behind the venue, and why we tell couples the same thing: book the place, then book the people who will document it.

Why Summer and September Saturdays Go First

Western Washington has a short, reliable stretch of good weather, roughly July through September, with June as a coin toss and October turning quickly. Almost every couple who wants an outdoor ceremony, a garden reception or golden-hour portraits is aiming at that same stretch, so demand piles onto a few months of Saturdays. Our post on the best time of year to get married in Snohomish County walks through each month's weather and light; the short version is that the dry season is where the competition is.

September has become its own peak. It is still dry most years, the light is softer and lower than July's, evenings are cooler for guests, and venues that were packed in August have a little more breathing room. Couples who used to pick September as the quieter option now find its Saturdays going nearly as fast as midsummer's. If September is your month, treat it like July when you plan your booking.

The timing of engagements adds to the squeeze. Many proposals happen between Thanksgiving and Valentine's Day, which means January and February are when photographers' calendars fill for the coming summer. A couple who books in November or early December is ahead of that wave. A couple who starts asking in March often finds their first-choice Saturday gone and ends up choosing between a Friday, a Sunday, or a different photographer.

What Happens If Your Date Is Closer Than Six Months

Ask anyway. A full calendar in July does not mean a full calendar on your date, and the only way to find out is to send the date. We reply within the hour, 7 days a week, and if we are already booked we say so in that first reply so you do not lose a day waiting on us.

Some dates are easier to place on short notice than others:

  • Fridays and Sundays in summer. Venues are often less expensive, and a photographer who is solid on Saturdays usually has the day before or after open.
  • Any weekday. Thursday weddings have grown for exactly this reason, and the light at 7 pm on a Thursday is identical to the light on a Saturday.
  • Saturdays from late October through April. Weather is the trade-off, the light is lovely, and most of the season is wide open.
  • Elopements and small weddings. Four hours of coverage is far easier to fit into a week than a ten-hour day, and our Elopement collection at $2,500 was built for them.

If you are booking close in, a few habits help: be flexible on start and end times, be ready to decide within a day or two of the call, and move the engagement session to after the wedding or skip it. The couple who replies quickly gets the date. The couple who sleeps on it for two weeks is often opening an email that begins with "unfortunately."

What to Have Decided Before You Reach Out

You do not need a binder. You need four or five things, and the rest can wait for the planning consultation.

  • A date, or two or three candidates. Ideally the venue is already signed, which fixes the date. If it is not, send the dates you are considering and we will tell you which are open, so availability can inform the venue decision instead of the other way round.
  • The venue, or at least the town. Lake Stevens, Snohomish, Arlington, Woodinville and Everett all plan differently: travel between getting-ready and ceremony locations, where the sun sets relative to the site, and whether there is an indoor backup all shape the day. "Somewhere near Snohomish" is enough to start.
  • Rough hours of coverage. Ceremony and portraits only is about four hours. Getting ready through the first dances is about eight. A full day with a planned exit is ten or more. Those map to our Elopement ($2,500), Classic ($4,500) and Signature ($5,500) collections; what each includes is on the wedding photography page and on pricing.
  • Photo only, or photo and video. We shoot both. Couples who want a wedding film should decide early, because video adds a second team to the same date and the bundles are priced together.
  • A budget range. Not a number to the dollar, just enough to know which collection is the honest fit. It saves everyone a round of emails.

What you do not need yet: a timeline, a shot list, a family photo list, colors, or a Pinterest board. Those are built together in the months before the wedding. If you are still weighing photographers, our guide on how to choose a wedding photographer in Snohomish County covers the questions worth asking on that first call.

A Month-by-Month Outline for 2027 Weddings

This outline assumes a June to September 2027 wedding, which is the case for most couples reading this in autumn. If your date is in spring 2027, you are already inside the booking window, so do the first three months' worth of steps this month.

  • October 2026. Settle the date and the total budget. Tour venues and sign one; the venue fixes everything downstream. Decide whether you want photo only or photo and video.
  • November 2026. Send photographer inquiries the week the venue contract is signed, with the date, the venue and your rough hours. Take the calls, look at full galleries rather than highlight reels, and choose. A signed agreement and a retainer hold the date; a friendly email does not.
  • December 2026. If you are not signed yet, sign now. Holiday engagements make January inboxes the busiest of the year, and being booked before the New Year puts you ahead of that wave. Then book the other one-per-day vendors: planner, DJ or band, florist.
  • January to February 2027. Pick an engagement session month. Winter beaches and bare trees photograph beautifully, cherry blossoms arrive in late March and April, and summer light comes with crowds. Book hair and makeup trials, and plan save-the-dates around the engagement photos.
  • March to April 2027. Engagement session, if you chose spring. Rough in the ceremony time by looking up sunset for your date; portraits in the last hour of light are the biggest single difference between good and great wedding photos in this region.
  • May 2027. Draft the timeline with us and finalize the family photo list with names and groupings. If your collection includes a second photographer, confirm which of us covers which side of the morning.
  • Four to six weeks out. Final timeline, final vendor list, a venue walk-through or arrival plan, and a details list (rings, invitations, heirlooms, perfume, shoes) for the first hour of coverage. Apply for your marriage license: Snohomish County issues them from the Recording office in Everett, you can start the application online, there is a three-day waiting period after purchase, and the license is valid for 60 days.
  • Wedding week. Send us the printed timeline and family list, pack the details box, and hand the day to your coordinator. Our job that week is to confirm, not to ask new questions.
  • After the wedding. Sneak peeks within a week, the full gallery in 6 to 8 weeks, and films in 8 to 12 weeks.

How Booking Works With Us

Start on our booking page. The form asks for your name, email, date and a message; the date field matters most, so include it even if it is still one of two options. You can also text or call (708) 677-7136, or pick a time for a free call directly from that page.

We reply within the hour with availability. If the date is open, we set up a short call to walk through your venue, your hours and what you want the photos to feel like, then send a proposal for the collection that fits. A signed agreement and a retainer secure the date on our calendar. The Classic and Signature collections include an engagement session, two photographers and a planning consultation, so once you are booked, the rest of the outline above happens with us rather than on your own.

Short version: book 6 to 12 months ahead, sooner for a June to September Saturday, and if you are closer than that, ask today rather than tomorrow. Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should you book a wedding photographer?

Six to twelve months before the wedding. Use the early end of that range for a Saturday between June and the end of September, when Snohomish County dates go first, and the later end for a weekday, a Friday or Sunday, or a date between late October and April.

Is three months too late to book a wedding photographer?

Not necessarily. Summer Saturdays are usually gone by then, but Fridays, Sundays, weekdays and off-season dates are often still open, and a four-hour elopement is easier to fit than a ten-hour day. Send us the date and we will tell you within the hour.

Should we book the venue or the photographer first?

The venue, because it fixes the date. Then book the photographer in the same month, since both can only host one wedding per day. If you are torn between two venues, send us both dates and let availability help you decide.

Do we need an exact date before contacting you?

No. Two or three candidate dates are fine, and we will tell you which are open. You also do not need a timeline, a shot list or a family photo list yet; those are built together in the months before the wedding.

What holds our wedding date once we decide?

A signed agreement and a retainer. An inquiry, a call or a proposal does not reserve the date, so if you have decided, sign promptly; popular Saturdays often have more than one couple asking about them.
