Timing makes or breaks a senior athlete session. Book at the right point in your season, in the right light, and the images capture you at your peak. This guide covers when to schedule sports & senior athlete photography around your sport, why golden hour and stadium lights matter, and how far ahead to lock your date.
Book During or Just Before Your Season
The best senior athlete photos are shot when you are in season — in the uniform you actually competed in, fit and game-ready. For fall sports that means late summer into fall; for winter sports, the heart of the season; for spring sports, the spring. Booking slightly before your final season also works, so the images are ready in time for senior night, recruiting, and graduation announcements.
The Best Light: Golden Hour & Stadium Lights
Two windows produce the cinematic look athletes want. Golden hour — the hour after sunrise or before sunset — wraps everything in warm, directional light. And stadium lights after dark create that dramatic, under-the-lights mood you cannot fake in the middle of the day. We plan every session around one or both, which is why start times matter and why we watch the season's sunset times closely.
Season by Season
Fall sports (football, soccer, cross country, volleyball): shoot September through November, with early sunsets giving you golden hour right after school. Winter sports (basketball, wrestling, swim): the light is short, so we lean into indoor and stadium-light setups. Spring sports (baseball, softball, track, tennis, soccer): April through June offers long, forgiving evenings — some of the best light of the year for athlete portraits in Snohomish County.
How Far Ahead to Book
Book two to four weeks ahead for a normal date, and earlier for senior night, playoff runs, or peak golden-hour evenings, which fill quickly. If you want images ready for graduation announcements or recruiting deadlines, give yourself a cushion for editing and printing. A quick message locks your spot before the calendar tightens.
Class of 2027
If you are graduating in 2027, this is your season — pair a senior athlete session with your senior portraits while you are still in uniform and still in the sport that defined high school.
