What to Wear for Senior Sports & Athlete Photos

The single most common question we get before a sports & senior athlete photography shoot is simple: what do I wear? The good news is that senior sports photos are easier to style than a normal portrait session, because your uniform does most of the work. This guide covers what to bring, how fabrics and colors read under stadium light, and the few things to avoid.

Start With Your Game Uniform

Your full game uniform is the anchor of the whole session — jersey, pants, socks, cleats or shoes, and any headwear you actually wear to play. Bring the real thing, freshly washed, wrinkles out. If you have both a home and an away kit, bring both; alternating them gives the gallery variety without changing the story. Numbers, patches, and team colors are what make these images unmistakably yours.

Add a Clean Casual Look

Beyond the uniform, one simple casual outfit rounds out the gallery — a well-fitting tee or hoodie in a solid color, dark jeans or joggers, clean sneakers. This gives you a relaxed, off-the-field frame that pairs nicely with the intensity of the action shots. Keep it simple; the athlete is the subject, not the clothes.

Bring Your Gear

Gear is what turns a portrait into a sports photo. Bat, glove, ball, cleats over the shoulder, helmet under the arm, racket, stick, or a track baton — whatever defines your sport. Props like a letterman jacket or a state-tournament ring add personality and a sense of the season. When in doubt, bring it; we would rather have too many options than too few.

Colors & Fabrics Under Stadium Light

Under warm stadium light and at golden hour, saturated team colors pop beautifully while pure white can blow out and pure black can lose detail. Matte fabrics read better than shiny synthetics. If you get to choose between two jerseys, the more saturated one usually photographs stronger. We meter for the light on the day, but leaning into color helps every frame.

What to Avoid

Skip anything that competes with you: busy logos on casual clothes, neon accessories, or a brand-new haircut you are not sure about. Make sure the uniform fits — safety-pin or tailor anything baggy the day before. And handle scuffs and grass stains ahead of time so we spend the light shooting, not fixing.

Pack the Night Before

Lay everything out the night before: uniform, casual look, gear, and a small towel. Arriving calm and organized means we spend the whole golden-hour window making pictures.
