Lake Stevens waterfront and North Cove Park: The boardwalk, the pier and the open water at the north end of the lake give a clean, polished look that reads as downtown Lake Stevens. Best in the last hour before sunset, when the light comes across the water. Pick it for a dressier outfit and an editorial feel.

Lundeen Park: The classic Lake Stevens backdrop: pier, lawn, shade trees and the lake with the foothills behind it. The shoreline faces the sunset, so the last 90 minutes of light are gold. Anyone who grew up here will recognize these frames immediately.

Cavalero Hill Park: Wide lawns, ball fields and an elevated view toward the lake and the Cascades. We start here about two hours before sunset so the low light rakes across the grass. This is the spot for athletes: bring the uniform, the cleats, the stick, the ball.

Centennial Trail: From the Lake Stevens and Machias trailheads, the paved trail runs between farmland and tree-lined corridors where the light comes through in shafts. The canopy softens midday sun and overcast skies alike, which makes it our most flexible location in spring and fall. Flannel, boots and anything outdoorsy belong here.

Catherine Creek Park: A wooded creek with a footbridge and thick green understory. The tree cover keeps the light soft at almost any hour and holds off a drizzle, so it is our plan B when the forecast turns. Quiet, moody and private.
